What happened to the good old days of knocking on crappy bands like Crypt Kicker or wanna be hack promoters like Jeff James? I mean people complaining about people complaining and then other people complaining about those people complaining about other people complaining? Have we lost our innocence on CL all of a sudden? I have hooked up with a second guitarist, and we're writing song and recording a demo. We need a melody minded vocalist that can do clean and hard vocals in the style of Nirvana/Alice in Chains/The Melvins/Seether. - We're long time players so we're competent, so you should be as well. We don't need any rock stars, druggies, or people with a lot of personal problems, or those who will only write/call a few times then disappear. You also don't need to have top of the line equipment, or look like a rock star, just have a love for music, and making it. This project is about writing hard, and sometimes mellow music, not looking good on stage, doing hair flips mid-song, or make up.

Right now there are 6-8 songs written, you should be able to contribute to the structure (the stuff that's posted is loose and can be re-arranged to fit good ideas), you should also be able to take direction for the songs that are already written, and anything new is written as a band. We're easy going, fun, and not hard to get along with at all!

Be aware, we are in the process of also looking for a bassist and drummer, although we have been writing fairly well using hired-guns or the occasional friend.

I'm guessing the people who are talking all the smack are people in cover and tribute bands. They seem to be the only ones who actually get paid in the area, and seem to not care about playing music and having a great time as much as playing whatever will get them paid the most. Open mics can be a pretty cool place to meet people if you're looking to start a band, and I actually enjoy playing music so I don't care about getting paid, especially if I'd have to play "the top hits of the 80s-today." That sounds like hell, and it sounds like you guys probably don't have much consideration for music as an art. If it's the extremely rare case that you're an original band in Ohio that can draw some people then it is pretty shitty to not get paid if you're making a bar some money. Some people (and some that are actually pretty good) just (gasp!) enjoy playing in front of an appreciative crowd. Is that wrong? damn.

Versitile Fiddle player looking for work

I play a variety of fiddle styles: Country, Bluegrass, Western Swing. Cajun, Irish, and Swing-Era Jazz.
I have 30 years of performing experience and I'm used to playing with high-quality musicians. I can fit in immediately with most bands. I play with a Bluegrass band now an I'm most interested in playing Classic Country or Western Swing but I will consider most any situation. I can improvise and play in all keys.
I also sing lead and harmony and have a fairly large repertoire of songs. I have professional equipment (A good amp and a 5-string electric fiddle).
I'm ONLY interested in currently working bands; I'm NOT interested in JAMMING or STARTING a band.
Please don't respond if you just want to jam or are just starting out in the music business; I'm used to playing with quality musicians.

My setup process is unmatched! It's not just a setup, but a complete evaluation of the instrument.
Typically for most Acoustic or Electric Guitars
and Basses, My setup procedure includes: Proper truss rod adjustment &
inspection. Any type of tremolo/bridge disassembling, cleaning, oiling, and setting the
intonation properly. Setting the string action and nut slot heights correctly, along
with diagnosing any nut issues. Proper pickup height adjustment. Checking and
tightening every screw on the instrument including fixing and reinforcing any
stripped out holes. Cleaning, polishing & waxing all necessary parts.
Cleaning the frets and fretboard. Applying a
neck conditioner for all Rosewood or Ebony necks.
Typical turn-around time is 1-3 days depending on condition. I'll get it done FAST!!!
I'll save you money and protect your investment!!
Here are some photo examples of my work...The top left picture shows a
customized Acoustic/Electric Dobro Resonator Guitar. It's got a Piezo
under-saddle bridge pickup, along with a Gibson Deluxe Mini Humbucker in the
Neck position. I also installed separate volume and tone controls that have
different value pots and caps for each pickup so the sound can be customized
for nearly any situation.
The top right picture shows a Squier Bullet neck after I did a complete Re-fret
with Dunlop Jumbo Fretwire. It originally had the small vintage fretwire, and I compound radiused the neck as well.
The bottom left picture is a close up of the Green Pau Abalone binding on an
American Black Walnut, 54' style Telecaster thineline body. (Fender didn't make the Thinlines until the late 60's).
I made the entire
body right from the log. It was also Green Pau Abalone bound on the top and
back of this hollowbody along with an inlaid "Zipper" stripe down the center of the
back also made from Abalone. I've got more pictures or see it in person since it's my personal guitar..
The bottom right picture shows one of many American Black Walnut Telecaster
pickguards I've made. These all wood pickguards are a unique and custom look
and will dress up any guitar. They can be made from any Hardwood of your
choosing, and I can also make a direct copy from your specific pickguard so it's
a perfect fit. For any kind of guitar as well, Les Paul, Strat, SG, etc..

I'd just like to reply to the comment about open mic nights. In general I do agree that it is usually just a ploy to exploit free music from musicians. However, I'd like to note that there are exceptions to this rule. I absolutely love going to open mic night at the barking spider. But this happens only twice a month, and they actually do pay musicians to play all 28-29 other days in the month.

Hope that didn't sound too much like an advertisement, but I'm just a loyal spider aficianado.

Actually you are playing into, and profiting from peoples 'narcissism'. I think most of the people that go to open mikes think they have some marketable talent. But they do not. It is sort of reverse gong show. It is just another predator making money on delusional people. Just as guitar center does selling equipment and recorders that never will or should make it out of the basement.

I would encourage people to 'STAY AWAY!' as you say.

Or else go and just have a coke. Trust me after a few weeks of people sitting there drinking cokes the bar owner will get rid of the host of the open mike.

If anyone has an serious dreams about being a pro: do not play unless you get paid. It is the best thermometer of how good you are: if no one is willing to pay you then you do not have it. Keep practicing or whatever.

Another thing is that at the open mikes you have little time to acclimate to the room, amp, mikes. It really is counterproductive to getting your 'stage legs'.

hello. Basicly I am looking for a guitarist who can write sick guitar licks and a drummer that can improv. WOW...THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN GREAT!!!!....BLUEGRASS, JAZZ, BLUES, FOLK, IRISH, CLASSIC ROCK, and OLD COUNTRY MUSICIANS, SINGERS AND FANS WANTED: "The Union Station Musical Arts Center" (USMAC)

I've restored my old barn, built in 1908 to the coolest music barn you've ever seen! We have 4 furnaces, tables and chairs for 168 people, a sound system unlike any I've ever heard, a phenomonal set of drums and an upright bass for pickers to use, a dance floor and some pretty cool lighting. ....why?....because I love music!

Starting Friday New Years Day January 1st and evey Friday night thereafter we will host an open mic jam for 1/2 the time and a scheduled band for 1/2 the time. If there is no scheduled band...we will jam all evening. We'll start at 7:00 PM and end at 10:00 PM or so ???? I know alot of folks will show up early and stay late...that's OK. We want to supply a Venue to expose local talent in a very classy place to play. We do not have much of a house backline yet so we recommend bringing a small amp if you need one.

ANY good cultural music is welcome... sorry that does NOT include metal, screamo, vulgarity and hard rock. Comedy is welcome !!

I am sure it will take us a few weeks to work out all the little bugs with the scheduling and the jamming so please be patient with us. The bands will be selected from those who come to the jam...it's about the music, not egos.

The new twist to this Venue is....it's a BUFFET......BRING A COVERED DISH AND THE HOUSE WILL SUPPLY THE MAIN COURSE (yes even if you're a musician). BYOB, no hard liquor, No children...can't handle the liability, it is a barn you know. Soft drinks, tea and coffee will be available. We will not charge an admission but we will accept donations to cover the cost of the food, the bands, utilities and general expenses. The pay for the bands will depend on the amount of the donations. The crowd will probably be from 30 to 65 years old.

The barn is in LaGrange Ohio, 25 miles SW of Cleveland, a 17 minute drive from the Great Northern Mall. Adress is 612 North Center St. (SR301) 5 miles south of the RT 20/ 480 exit, right beside McDonalds. The first show is during the Rose Bowl for which we have a big screen TV set up so you won't have to miss the end of the game! We have jam rooms in the old horse stalls to warm up and / or practice. A nice bathroom for the ladies and a port-o-pot for the guys (sorry). I keep seeing people mentioning "networking." I doubt most of this networking has paid off, since there are more and more open mics, few halfway decent bands who perform for pay, and no one is getting anywhere except the bar owners, most of whom see open mics as free entertainment.

The poster who stated that you won't get paid if you "desperately play for free" is right on the money. As a former professional musician (both on stage and studio) and the OP of the open mic topic, I have watched Cleveland's music scene deteriorate tremendously over the last 35 years. There are only a very few establishments who use open mics to look for new talent for paid gigs...most of them are perfectly content to rake in your beer dollars in exchange for - well, nothing.

I have occasionally turned up at open mics and yes, I've seen some pretty good folks who deserve a real gig. Do they get them? Rarely. So to the person who feels that constructive suggestions are needed, here goes: if you want to make open mics useful for musicians, start asking - or better yet, demanding! - that the owners/managers of these places to offer gigs to those whose performances stand out and give them a chance. It's no wonder that things are so stagnant in this area, when good musicians are expected to work for free (and far too many of them DO). Under the current circumstances, it's nearly impossible for bands to gain any kind of following.

And as far as being bitter? I'm not bitter at all, and I find it interesting that anyone would assume such. I left music over 15 years ago to pursue a more worthwhile and much better paying career after things started going downhill. It just saddens me to see musicians taken advantage of. As a musician, I never worked for free. Other people don't work for free, why should you?

I began singing at open mic nights at the late Brady's Cafe in Kent OH back in the 90's, and it served me well in many, many ways. I was shy, introverted, and scared to death that my talent wasn't good enough. I met some of the most amazing musicians, supportive people, and made friends with whom I am still in touch.

A year after singing there, I began auditioning for the Cleveland Orchestra's Blossom Festival Chorus (and btw...Cleveland Orchestra Chorus is ENTIRELY voluntary, just in case you weren't sure), got in, and sang Beethoven's 9th Symphony. I've since sung in dozens of shows with them and with COC, and it's entirely of my own free will because I appreciate the music, the experience (even if it's not paid, it looks damn good on a resume!). Oh, and because I know it will come up in the replies, I do sing for pay regularly at a local cathedral, in a local band, and will be performing with Opera Cleveland in the spring.

Open mic nights opened a door for me to explore my creativity, gain self-esteem, and network. I won't say it will do all of these things for everyone, as not everyone has the drive or desire to lead them in the same direction. I will say that I appreciate them for what they began in me, however.

So boycott away! In the meantime, I'll be singing for free and encouraging those looking for experience while supporting the hosts AND establishments!

WOW...THE RESPONSE HAS BEEN GREAT!!!!....BLUEGRASS, JAZZ, BLUES, FOLK, IRISH, CLASSIC ROCK, and OLD COUNTRY MUSICIANS, SINGERS AND FANS WANTED: "The Union Station Musical Arts Center" (USMAC)
I've erstored my old barn, built in 1908 to the coolest music barn you've ever seen! We have 4 furnaces, tables and chairs for 168 people, a sound system unlike any I've ever heard, a phenomonal set of drums and an upright bass for pickers to use, a dance floor and some pretty cool lighting. ....why?....because I love music! Starting Friday New Years Day January 1st and evey Friday night thereafter we will host an open mic jam for 1/2 the time and a scheduled band for 1/2 the time. If there is no scheduled band...we will jam all evening. We'll start at 7:00 PM and end at 10:00 PM or so ???? I know alot of folks will show up early and stay late...that's OK. We want to supply a Venue to expose local talent in a very classy place to play. ANY good cultural music is welcomed. I am sure it will take us a few weeks to work out all the little bugs with the scheduling and the jamming so please be patient with us. The bands will be selected from those who come to the jam...it's about the music, not egos.
The new twist to this Venue is....it's a BUFFET......BRING A COVERED DISH AND THE HOUSE WILL SUPPLY THE MAIN COURSE (yes even if you're a mucician). BYOB, no hard liquor, No children...can't handle the liability, it is a barn you know. Soft drinks, tea and coffee will be available. We will not charge an admission but we will accept donations to cover the cost of the food, the bands, utilities and general expenses. The pay for the bands will depend on the amount of the donations. The crowd will probably be from 30 to 65 years old.
The barn is in LaGrange Ohio, 25 miles SW of Cleveland, a 17 minute drive from the Great Northern Mall. Adress is 612 North Center St. (SR301) 5 miles south of the RT 20/ 480 exit, right beside McDonalds. The first show is during the Rose Bowl for which we have a big screen TV set up so you won't have to miss the end of the game! We have jam rooms in the old horse stalls to warm up and / or practice. A nice bathroom for the ladies and a port-o-pot for the guys (sorry). A New Years Eve Insurrection mass to celebrate another year gone by. Culminating in the third annual Funeral March for the Rotten Ideas of the Year (2009 now), which will be a spectacle and
procession through coventry village, rain shine or Blizzard, (it has happened in the presence of high winds and snow.) AND THEN, the Possibilitarian New YEARS RESOLUTION PARADE.

The Insurrection Mass is a non-religious Puppet Service in the presence
of the paper-mache gods of the day, with a Fiddle Sermon inspired by the
Rotten Idea of the day. Funeral March Parade will happen around 3:45 pm.
The show is slightly more kid friendly than a catholic Mass, but is
certainly open to kids of all ages.

Why Is this mass an Insurrection mass? What exactly inspires insurrection? And what makes insurrectionists celebrate mass?
The celebration of an Insurrection mass has several functions:
1) to lift up the depressed souls of frustrated citizens
2)to sing a new song which is raw enough to combine all the sweet and sour notes of the human voice into one big yell, as big as a tornado, or even a steady breeze
3)to tickle wishy-washy minds with the possibility of insurrection.

Insurrection means: possibilitarian anarchic celebration is victorious over Not-SO-Bad-any-more pseudo-hope or even everything-is-meaningless post-modern nihilism.
Insurrection means: the victory of cheap artists over the moneymaking religion.
Insurrection means: life is possible!

We need Volunteers for this show and parade. No performing experience necessary. Rehearsal is in the performance space on Thursday the 31st starting at 11 am. Hello, I have been successfully teaching music lessons for the past 15 years in Columbus, Ohio both privately, and in local music studios. In 2006, I received a Masters in Music from The Ohio State University. I play both piano and guitar and have also been a traditional accompanist and contemporary service leader in Presbyterian, Methodist, and Disciples of Christ churches. I went to University School, and I have recently moved to reside in Cleveland Heights.

As an independent teacher, I am currently offering piano and guitar lessons on the east side of Cleveland in your home. I am a registered member of the OMTA (Ohio Music Teachers Association). I believe that the best lessons are taught in the home of the student, the environment in which the learner is most comfortable. I am a reliable, caring, and patient teacher who truly enjoys teaching music to students and discovering the joy of learning. My music materials include well known selections in classical, jazz, hymns, and popular songs. I have frequent recitals (2 to 4 a year) at local churches or retirement homes in order to give the students an opportunity to perform in the community. My goal is to educate students how to perform artistically with a musical instrument by reading and understanding notation. In my teaching, I strive to have my students learn to express themselves creatively while developing graceful movement and facility.

I am most successful finding students through referrals. These families choose to make music an important part of their daily life.
