Gasoline prices are flattening consumer wallets and hobbling our economy, while the Democrats sit back and play politics with the issue.

Voter surveys show that the economy and gas prices top the list of the most critical issues facing our country. A Washington Post/ABC News poll reported last week that 85 percent of voters polled said gas prices will be either extremely or very important to their vote in this year's elections. And with good reason: Americans are getting walloped with huge gas bills, while utilities, buckling under ever-higher energy prices, are raising electricity rates to historic levels.

Other industries are getting hit, too. Airlines are cutting back on flights and services as higher fuel costs eat into declining revenues. Increased trucking costs are driving up the price of nearly everything that's shipped. Tighter budgets mean consumers are cutting back on discretionary spending. Retail sales barely budged last month, even despite government tax rebates.

Part of the answer to rising oil prices is to boost domestic production. President Bush has been pressing that solution almost weekly, but to no avail among Democrats on Capitol Hill.

While Bush and the Republicans have kept up a steady drumbeat for sharply increased oil production, the Democratic majority has sat on its hands, refusing to deal with the crisis. The reason: Barack Obama and the Democrats in Congress are dead set against offshore drilling. Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are more than happy to let Bush and the Republicans suffer the political consequences.

"They're running out the clock until November, to the detriment of all of us and our economy, because they think it will help them at the ballot box," said a Republican leadership official.

Last week, Bush lifted the executive ban on drilling for oil on the Outer Continental Shelf that was imposed by his father. The next step must be to end the ban by statute, but Pelosi and Reid apparently have no intention of acting on any energy bill, no matter how critical the situation becomes.

The response in Democratic cloakrooms seems to be "let Bush and Republicans turn slowly, slowly in the wind" -- an apt turn of phrase that fits into the Democrats' rigid energy orthodoxy, which supports biofuel, solar and wind, spurns oil production at home.

The Obama and Pelosi Democrats are captives of their global-warming special interests, who are dead set against drilling. Obama never mentions oil except when he attacks Bush and the Republicans as captives of the oil lobby. He is all solar panels, witchgrass and windmills. The specious argument against drilling asserts that it would have no effect on the supply or price of oil for years. Well, we may not see the full result of cancer research for many years, but that didn't mean we should have given up.

In the last decade, Republicans sent President Clinton a bill to drill for more domestic oil to make us less dependent on foreign product. We would be producing a lot more oil, and prices would be lower if it had become law, but Clinton vetoed it, and that's why we are in the mess we're in now.

Actually, it's another left-wing lie that passing a drilling bill now would have no effect on today's oil prices. Just the act of declaring a pro-production oil and gas policy would "send a message to the market and result in lower prices for oil and gas," John McCain is telling voters on the stump.

International oil traders bet on what the world's supplies will be in the future because supply determines price. Increasing oil exploration and production will drive future prices down. We saw an example of that this last week when crude oil prices on the New York Mercantile Exchange fell sharply by about $11 a barrel in two days after the Energy Department reported that commercial petroleum stocks rose the previous week.

Americans instinctively understand this common-sense axiom of supply and demand economics. That's why polls show that over 70 percent of us support drilling for more oil in wilderness areas and beneath our oceans. But our patience is coming to an end with the Obama Democrats who say no to more oil drilling, no to more refineries and no to nuclear power. Last week, the Gallup Poll said the Democratic Congress's approval rating has sunk to 14 percent. It has dropped below 20 percent only six times in the last 34, years and the Pelosi Congress accounts for four of them.

The conventional wisdom says Democrats will likely make major gains in Congress in November, but they may not do as well as expected if the voters blame them for inaction on the biggest economic issue in the country. The GOP will be hammering them on this for the rest of the election cycle.

There's a way to start digging ourselves out of this deep energy hole, and that is at the ballot box. Remember that the next time you fill up your tank.

You say that "we" are in a fight with muslim extremists. That's funny, I'm not at war with them. They are at war with the American policies that blindly support the true terrorist state in the middle east, Israel. I strongly oppose retroactive immunity in the FISA bill�. No one should get a free pass to violate the basic civil liberties of the American people - not the President of the United States, and not the telecommunications companies that fell in line with his warrantless surveillance program. John McCain supports lowering all the barriers to trade with other countries. This means that even more businesses will move across seas and even more jobs will be lost by American taxpayers

He will overturn Roe v. Wade and will install judges whose main priority is to force women to have unwanted children. He will not, however, work to provide healthcare or government assistance to those children. Furthermore, McCain does not even recognize that millions of women each year will still have abortions, risking their lives and causing even further drain on the healthcare industry (taxpayers will pay for the damages)

He does not believe in scientific advancements through stem cell research. If anyone you know has had cancer, paralysis, amputation or other illnesses, he will make sure that no advances can be made that could find a cure for these illnesses and others.

He does not believe in any kind of civil union. Fine if you don't support gay marriage, but this would take away all rights of civil partnerships--most importantly that of allowing non-family hospital visits. Even if you are straight, your friends would not be allowed to visit you in the hospital.

John McCain will take away the national tax on gas for a few months during the summer. This tax will have minimal impact on everyday American drivers except for the fact that the taxes he is taking away will put the roads all over the country into disrepair. If you think that 18 cents off your gas will help you, you forget that the broken axle on your vehicle will cost you a lot more.

He believes in giving big businesses even more tax breaks as well as instituting a new tax break for businesses who "buy equipment." This alone will only further make the big businesses richer without helping the middle class in the least degree.

John McCain wants to suspend ALL governmental spending for a solid year after taking office so that he can "see which programs are working." Numerous studies have already been done and it is well known which government plans are failing. Cutting spending on ALL programs--even the ones that are proven to be effective--will immediately disable the American government and it's people. If you are already trying to make ends meet, the government under McCain's rule would not be able or willing to help you until at least 2010.

John McCain is encouraging American's 55 and older to forego retirement and to find employment. His "special, targeted assistance for elderly workers" will only give tax breaks to those over 55 who are still employed. This will not only flood the system with inefficient workers who would otherwise be enjoying retirement, but will also create even more unemployment for the younger workers who so desperately need to support their young families.

Taken directly from John McCain's website: "John McCain Believes That We Should Not Subsidize Prescription Drugs. He will propose reforms to reduce the large subsidies in the Medicare drug program." What does this mean? If you are on Medicare, John McCain will vote to take away your prescription coverage. He will not support your medicines to be covered any longer. If you are disabled or are elderly, and you take, or will take medicine in the future, this is an extremely important issue for you. Vote accordingly. (It just got real personal.)

These are just a few of the extremely damaging policies John McCain would like to install. I have written these exactly as they were stated from his website, so feel free to check them out yourself under his "issues." The results from his stances have been added so that you can fully understand the effects of the policies that he would like to implement. It is very clear to anyone informed of such things that McCain is not out to help the average American, but will only further hurt the economy but continuing George W. Bush's policies.

My teenage son asked me yesterday if I was a registered Republican--I lied and said I was an independant. After having voted in the WORST President in our nation's history--a man who lied us into a needless war of choice that is BANKRUPTING our nation, who said oil from iraq would pay for the war and now a TRILLION wasted dollars later, gas is over $4.00 a gallon! Saying that because Obama is pro choice that he supports "abortion on demand" is a gross generalization and ignores Obama's efforts to reduce the teenage pregnancy rates, and his support of sex education which has been proven to LIMIT the spread of std's. Bush's typical head in the sand approach applies to sex ed too--which he is against, and his blind pro-abstinence policy which has been proven to be a dismal failure resulting in more numbers of pregnant teenage girls...and his world wide abstinence program has prevented money from going to providing condoms and medical attention to people in desperate need of both. Bush has blood on his hands not only over Iraq, but from his DEADLY pro abstinence programs world wide, especially in Africa. I was stupid enough to vote for Bush twice--who I now can see is one of the DUMBEST most DAMAGING Presidents our nation has ever suffered under. He lied us into a needless war of choice that is bankrupting our country...remember when George said that oil from Iraq would pay for the war? A TRILLION dollars and more later, and gas prices are over $4.00 a gallon--thanks Bush! Our economy would not be TANKING right now were it not for Bush. Obama was right about Iraq from day one, he graduated at the top of his class from Harvard, NOT the bottom of his class like IDIOTS Bush and John McSame. Obama is smart, he can LISTEN, he does not IGNORE facts and cling to his preconceived notions like Bush does...and he is a patriot, and attempts at labeling him a Muslim and unpatriotic are PATHETIC attempts by DESPERATE people to discredit our nation's next President.

I am a Republican who can recall that being a Republican used to mean being for fiscal responsibility--Bill Clinton left Bush hundreds of BILLIONS in his budget SURPLUS when leaving office, Bush is leaving our nation with TRILLIONS in Iraq bills, and gas approaching $5.00 a gallon. Here's what Democrats Have Done to Restrain Energy Availability!

 On February 2, 2005, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) introduced a bill (H.R. 567) to designate oil-rich lands within ANWR as wilderness and components of the National Wilderness Preservation System, thus erecting another barrier to energy extraction there. Rep. Markey has reintroduced the legislation in the 110th Congress (H.R. 39).

 On April 20, 2005, Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA) offered an amendment (H.Amdt. 72) to H.R. 6 to strike the provisions of the underlying bill allowing oil and gas exploration in ANWR. 85% of Democrats voted for the amendment, while 87% of the Republicans voted against it.

 On April 21, 2005, Rep. Frank Pallone (D-NJ) introduced a bill (H.R. 1798) to prohibit leasing for the exploration, development, or production of oil, natural gas, or any other mineral in either the Mid-Atlantic or the North Atlantic planning areas of the OCS. Rep. Pallone reintroduced the bill (H.R. 777) in the 110th Congress.

 On February 16, 2006, Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA) introduced a bill (H.R. 4782) to prohibit oil and gas preleasing, leasing, and related activities in areas of the OCS located off the coast of California and to exclude such areas from the OCS inventory required under current law. Rep. Capps reintroduced the bill (H.R. 2918) in the 110th Congress.

 On May 4, 2006, Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) introduced a bill (H.R. 5300) to repeal the existing law requirement for a comprehensive inventory of OCS oil and natural gas resources. Rep. Hinchey reintroduced the bill (H.R. 586) in the 110th Congress.

 On April 19, 2007, Rep. Jay Inslee (D-WA) introduced a bill (H.R. 1957) to prohibit the conduct of oil and gas preleasing, leasing, and related activities in OCS areas located in the North Aleutian Basin Planning Area and to exclude such planning area from a mandated inventory of OCS oil and natural gas resources.

 On June 15, 2007, Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) introduced a bill (H.R. 2758) to prohibit oil and gas preleasing, leasing, and related activities in areas of the OCS located off the coast of Mendocino, Humboldt, and Del Norte Counties in the state of California and to exclude such areas from the mandatory inventory of OCS energy reserves.

 On April 24, 2008, Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL) introduced a bill (H.R. 5861) to prohibit oil and gas preleasing, leasing, and related activities in certain areas of the OCS off the coast of Florida.

 On December 7, 2006, Rep. Marty Meehan (D-MA) introduced a bill (H.R. 6417) to repeal the tax credit for producing fuel from a nonconventional source.

 On June 27, 2007, Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) offered an amendment (H.Amdt. 448) to the Interior Appropriations bill to prohibit funds in the bill from being used to prepare or publish final regulations regarding a commercial leasing program for oil shale resources on public lands or to conduct an oil shale lease sale. 88% of Democrats voted for the amendment, while 93% of Republicans voted against it.

 On June 27, 2007, the House passed the Interior Appropriations bill (H.R. 2643) introduced by Rep. Norman Dicks (D-WA), which included a provision to prohibit the use of funds to prepare or publish final regulations regarding a commercial leasing program for oil shale and tar sands resources on public lands or to conduct an oil shale lease sale pursuant to the Energy Policy Act of 2005. 98% of Democrats voted for the bill, while 76% of Republicans voted against it.

 On August 4, 2007, the House passed a bill (H.R. 3221) that includes a prohibition on surface occupancy for oil or gas exploration or development purposes in each lease for certain federal lands on the Roan Plateau in Colorado. 96% of Democrats voted for the bill, while 86% of Republicans voted against it.

 On December 18, 2007, the House passed a bill (H.R. 6), now current law, that prohibits federal agencies from procuring fuels made from unconventional petroleum sources, aimed at stopping the Defense Department�s plan to procure fuels derived from Canadian oil sands

 On November 18, 2005, Rep. Bernard Sanders (I-VT, who caucused with the Democrats) introduced a bill (H.R. 4420) to repeal, among other things, the tax incentive from the Energy Policy Act of 2005 allowing a taxpayer to expense 50% of the cost of certain crude oil refinery property placed in service before January 1, 2008.

 On April 27, 2006, Rep. John Larson (D-CT) introduced a bill (H.R. 5234) to repeal tax incentives from the Energy Policy Act of 2005 relating to expensing of crude oil refinery property and exemptions from limitations on oil depletion deductions for certain small crude oil refiners.

Adding insult to injury, besides ongoing efforts to prohibit the expansion of domestic supplies of petroleum and coal-based fuels, the Democrats proposed and passed through the House, as one of their signature items in their first few weeks of the majority in 2007, a bill increasing taxes on the domestic manufacturing of petroleum (H.R. 6). Democrats voted in near-unison for it, as if increasing taxes on American companies will somehow increase the production, the pricing, and the global competitiveness of such companies.

Then the Democrats followed that punch at America�s energy with a gas-price controls bill (H.R. 1252) that attempted to micromanage the market for gasoline. Democrats again voted in near-unison for it, arguing that nothing solves a problem faster or better than the federal government
