open your mind, heart, and home to an exchange student

Sharing daily life with a teenager from another country and culture is a rich and rewarding experience, and it's a wonderful way to bring more understanding into the world. If you've ever thought about welcoming an exchange student into your home and family, now's the time to learn more. AFS, the leading international high school student exchange program, needs families in our community to host high school students for an academic year or six months. Students arrive in August.

AFS students come from more than 40 countries and represent many different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. OPTIONAL: Our community has the special opportunity to also host students from the Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES), which was initiated by the U.S. Department of State to build bridges of understanding between Americans and people in countries with significant Muslim populations. These students compete for highly competitive scholarships and once selected go through a long training and orientation.

All kinds of families can host--two-parent households with young children or teenagers, single-parent families, families with adopted children, foster parents, as well as couples and single people who do not have children or who have grown children. One of the most important characteristics of a host family is being eager and excited to share your life and activities while providing the same kind of care, support, and comfort as you would to your own child or family members.

Local AFS Volunteers enroll students in high school and support students and their families to help both gain the most from their experience. In addition to host families, AFS needs people who are interested in becoming volunteer liaisons to work locally with families and their hosted students. Anyone interested in learning more about hosting or volunteering with AFS should visit www.afsusa.org or respond to this posting.

AFS Intercultural Programs/USA is a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization. The mission of AFS is to work toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.
On July 29th, the AIDS Taskforce is co-sponsoring an event at Chautauqua-in-Chagrin: Mechai Viravaidya, founder of Population and Community Development Association, Thailand (and popularly known as "Mr. Condom" in Thailand as his programs have led to a drastic reduction in new HIV infections: from 143,000 in 1991 to 21,000 in 2003) will be speaking at the Chagrin Foundation for Arts and Culture in Chagrin Falls: http://www.chagrinfoundation.org/calendar.cfm?action=event&calendareventid=27
In conjunction with his talk, the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland seeks to recruit volunteers to participate in a city-wide "Wrap it Up" condom distribution during the afternoon and evening of Friday July 25th. People will team up in small groups and distribute condoms and safer-sex literature in various locations throughout the city; public places where people tend to congregate, such as the warehouse district, Coventry , cedar-lee, public square, etc.

To do this, we really need your help! Please consider volunteering a couple hours on the evening of Friday July 25th for this worthwhile effort! Here is the schedule:

7:00 p.m. Meet at the Taskforce ( 3210 Euclid Avenue ) for a brief training and pizza

7:30 p.m. Head out to your assigned area to distribute condoms

9:45 p.m. Meet back at the Taskforce to process and reflect on your experience

10:00 p.m. Go home!

We hope you will make some time for this exciting opportunity to help spread the word about safer sex in Cleveland ! RSVP with your contact information (name, e-mail, telephone number) to me at epike@atfgc.org by Wednesday July 23rd to confirm your participation.

Thank you in advance for your help and we hope to see you on Friday, July 25th!

Become a CIEE Host Family!

Families with or without children, as well as responsible single adults can become volunteer host families. All that is required of our hosting families is that they can provide a warm and loving environment for our students and are interested in encouraging the student to become an active member of their family.

As a Hosting Family You:

Welcome a student into your home as a family member
Provide an individual bed and meals
Maintain contact with your CIEE Local Coordinator
Provide your student with necessary transportation or assisting in arranging alternate transportation i.e. a bike, car pool, etc. to and from school
Attend host family orientations, student welcome meetings and farewell parties
We offer hosting opportunities for the either the semester or academic year program. Additionally, families may choose to welcome a student to the community by hosting for a short-term period (approx. 3 weeks)

"When Belgica came to stay with us we were excited about showing her American customs and culture. But the truth is we learned more from her - about our selves and the world we live in - than we ever expected. We'll treasure the experience and recommend it to anyone!"

What are the benefits of being a host family?

Unique insight and sharing
Welcome a foreign student into your home
Share your daily family experiences with them
Show your exchange student the American way of life, its sports, hobbies and culture
Learn a new language
Gain new insights and a renewed appreciation for different cultures
Embark on one of the most memorable and rewarding opportunities of a lifetime for you, your family, and your exchange student
"It was amazing to see how Americans live up close. This is the way to really understand another culture. My family was so welcoming. I hope to come back and visit my host family many, many times. And I hope they'll come to visit me in Italy!"

What do we provide our Host Families?

Host family training and orientation sessions
Ongoing assistance and support from our professional full time staff and Local Coordinators in your community
Thorough screening and selection of students
Full insurance coverage for each student
"My host sister is one of my best friends; we e-mail practically every week. I'll never forget my stay in Minnesota."
For children born in poverty often in rural areas, medical care is rarely available. If a child suffers from a birth defect such as a cleft palate, not only are they are forced to deal with issues breathing and speaking, but also with the rejection and shame from society.
The Center for Cultural Interchange is calling on families of all backgrounds to host an exchange student this fall. CCI has openings at local schools for our exchange students and we are calling on all families to volunteer to host a student this fall.

Now more than ever, your family can make a difference by hosting an exchange student…making the lifelong dream of an international student come true, and yes, contributing in a small, but significant way, to global peace and understanding.

Who can host?
CCI host families come in all shapes and sizes and represent the diversity of American culture. Our families are of varied economic, religious and racial backgrounds and include:

* Working parents
* Couples without children
* Singles and single parents
* Adoptive parents
o Boys and girls, ages 15-18 years old
o Arriving in August and January, for 5 or 10 month programs
o Representing 40 countries worldwide
o Academically strong students
o Talented in music, art, dance, sports, computers, more
o Proficient in English
o Eager to experience life in America and share their culture
o Well-screened by our sending partners abroad

Thank you for a few moments of your time.

OHdogs.info was created on July 1, of 2008 to put forth an effort to
help create a better connected community between Ohio Dog Lovers,
Rescues, Shelters, and Volunteers. The purpose of this site is to help
spread the word about the need to give our best friends a voice in
today's world. We cherish, love, and treat our pets like a part of the
family, and so now is the time to help make other pets become family
members to a good home. OHdogs.info is here to help give some feedback
and have a listing of Volunteers, Shelters, Rescues, Events, and Links
to your favorite site. Even though "dogs" is in the name we will
definitely take information on non-canine animals and animal
organizations.

If you visit the website, there is a form that you can fill out and
get your Shelter/Rescue added to the site for FREE! That means FREE
Promotion!

"The original American patriots were those individuals brave enough to resist with force the oppressive power of King George. I accept the definition of patriotism as that effort to resist oppressive state power." -Ron Paul

This is Austin Petersen from the Libertarian National Committee. I am writing today because I am in need of patriots who are dedicated to the cause of Liberty, and are willing to work for it in their local areas. Volunteers are needed to gain ballot access in your area, and it is crucial that we acquire enough volunteers to fill the slates so that Libertarian candidates can run for office. If you have been looking for more ways to get involved, this is a great way to begin. Never has the time been more perfect in our history for the Libertarians to unite and work together to make our voices heard. Please respond to this ad if you are interested.

Volunteer to help veterans diagnosed with PTSD! (Mentor)

Please join us Saturday June 14 for an informational meeting about the Ghost Rider Foundation. We will be recruiting volunteers, committee leaders and board members. The meeting will begin at 11:00 am at Gunny's Hall (8720 Twinbrook Rd Mentor OH 44060). We will be providing refreshments.

PLEASE RSVP TO KATIE AT GhostRiderFoundation@gmail.com

The Ghost Rider Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces that have been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

The GRF has two missions:

1. To educate people about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This will eliminate the stigma attached to PTSD. This will also allow veterans and their families to recognize PTSD and seek help.

2. To provide direct financial assistance to veterans diagnosed with PTSD for living expenses, additional counseling or other needs as approved by the board of directors.

To accompish these missions we plan to have educational seminars for the community, active duty military and veterans and their families. These will take place pre-deployment, during deployment and post-deployment. It is our hope that providing education will remove the stigma attached with PTSD and will also ensure that it is recognized so that it can be diagnosed and treated.

We also want to help veterans diagnosed with PTSD on an individual basis. We hope to do this by providing individual grants. The GRF will provide direct financial assistance to veterans diagnosed with PTSD or to their families. Grants will be made on an individual basis as approved by the board of directors for living expenses, additional counseling, family counseling, or for other needs stated by the veteran.

My mom suffered a massive stroke in April. After 4 weeks at the Cleveland Clinic, she is now at a long-term acute rehab facility. She wants to come home but I can't fix our home up for her by myself. We need a ramp/porch for a wheelchair access; we need plumbing services and a total redo of a bathroom/bedroom to accomodate her. I need help to help her and I don't know where else to go beyond prayer. In exhange for the skilled labor and materials of others, I can offer my professional services ~ I am a licensed Language Arts High School Teacher and a professional writer. In a split second my world as I knew it, changed. I have been a caregiver to others all my life. I am single with no children and am now in need of help myself - to help my mom. I believe in the philosophy of "Pay It Forward" and I believe in the power of prayer.

If so, take part in a research study on family relationships and teenagers’ emotions.

Researchers at Case Western Reserve University are studying how family relationships influence teenager’s emotions. Parents / caregivers and teens aged 11 to 17 will fill out questionnaires, watch several emotional film clips, and talk to each other during a 60 to 90 minute visit to the Child & Family Lab at Case Western Reserve University.

Families are compensated for taking part in this study.
