Real Vintage Heirloom
This is an unmolested, original 1960's porcelain-enamel Flying A wall sign and would have been used on the building fascia or gable end. They were all supposed to be destroyed when Getty Oil came in and rebranded the chain of gas stations. This one survived. I have had it for more than 35 years. There is some damage to the porcelain here and there, but I thought it best to leave it alone and original. There are no dents or bends in the metal. The wing tips extend about 6" on either side of the 42" circle of the main disc. The depth of the dish is about 1-1/2". The A, the wings, the feathers and the FLYING/ SERVICE are embossed in the very thick and heavy metal. I would say about 12 gauge. The porcelain has a good shine and is smooth, albeit somewhat weathered. Colors are red, white and black. The back is a galvanized type of finish. There are bolt holes around the perimeter, presumably for lag screws. I have it hung like a picture using coat hanger wire and two heavy duty hooks. It weighs about 25-30 pounds.

There are a number of Flying A signs around, and I gave my brother-in law one of the 6' discs which were used as street signs. They are flat, 2D items. Those are not that hard to find, but will still bring several thousand dollars in the excellent condition of his. This is in another category altogether. There would have had to be a stamp and die to press the 3-D relief in the metal, before porcelain coating. That's why you won't even find a reproduction of this--too expensive to do. For anyone who is a true petroliana aficionado, this is probably a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Not interested in trades or low-ball offers. I don't have to sell it.

Because of the SPAM phone calls we all get, it would probably be best if you responded to the ad via Craigslist reply and leave your phone number. If I get a call and it doesn't leave a message, I usually block the number.
