Vintage 1980s Radio Shack Archer Telephone Listener Model 43-231. The device is essentially an amplifier and magnetic pickup coil which allowed users to amplify the the phone conversations, for the user who may be hard of hearing or to permit others to hear the conversation similar to a conference call. Its can be powered by either a 9 Volt battery or 9 Volt AC adapter.
The pick up coil will work with any magnetic speaker or driver similar to the land line phones of the past. The item is fully operational. We are including the period correct proper 9 volt Radio Shack Adapter with a 2.5mm phone plug. This adapter utilizes a very small (3/16 or 2.5mm NOT 3.5 or 1/8" ) connector and they are very hard to find. It was specifically made with two different sizes input jacks so that the user would not plug the 9 volt charger into the phone pick-up coil jack and damage the unit. Please see the photos.
For the technically inclined folks this device uses a Texas Instruments (National Semi) 8 Pin Dip LM386 Single Channel Audio Amplifier (see photo). This chip has a very wide range of operating voltage. It had decent specifications and the ability to drive a variety of speaker impedances. It's a simple, readily available, low-power audio amplifier IC that requires minimal external components to function. The LM386 was introduced in 1983 by TI and I expect this device was one of the many that utilized these
