Generally, this unit creates a natural sounding spacious or spatial playback (concert hall) effect to typical stereo material. While delay effects were generally available in the pro audio markets, for performers and studios, (even as far back to tape loops in the 30-40s), this unit was one of the few precursor digital processors specifically designed for the audiophile market. The ADC DD-4AX unit was made in Japan and marketed by ADC Products (then owned by BSR) in the USA in the 1980s. The success of these types of processors were the forerunners of "surround sound", to mimic a spacious movie theatre in your home.
ADC (Audio Dynamics Corporation) Audio Dynamics Corporation (ADC) was a well known manufacturer of very high performance magnetic phono cartridges. In the late 1970s they branched out to engineering audio "effects" devices including the well respected Sound Shaper Equalizers. The company was founded in the early 1960's. but was eventually sold to BSR in the late 1970's.
How does this unit work? This ADC DD-4AX digital delay processor introduces time delays from 4 ms (Milliseconds) to 1024 ms for hi-fi systems to restore acoustics of a large auditorium sound reflections spatial effects to material heard in a typical size listening room. The DD-4AX electronically simulates those large room reflections through a combination of delay circuitry and an integrator or mixer, which provides predeterminate attenuation to the delayed signal. It has two, two channel outputs one at line level and one powered. The unit features an integrated, low power two channel amplifier, to reproduce delayed signals for a separate set of added speakers for a more rich spatial effect (rear or side placed speakers).
