There are too many artists writing really good material in the rock genera here in Cleveland anyway who needs or wants more of that? What we need is more homogenized nu-alt-metal and cover bands.
Influences are great and what makes every musician what they are. Unfortunately, very few can keep it together long enough to distill something that is combustible and [if] they do it sounds a lot like something you've heard before, let alone write a simple tune and lyric that public would buy. Take this advise, "You have to be simple minded to be an artist."
Bands are tricky animals, enigmatic is how I'd describe it. Putting and keeping together a band over a course of years, giging around, it ain't easy its what Robbie Robertson called "untenable". But we nuts still keep trying.
Mimicking a particular sound only pays homage to those whom created it, cover bands are what Marcel Duchamp may have call the tick on back of a dog. Years ago the trend was Beatles/Stones, Zeppelin/Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, etc... NIN/ hair metal, west coast Grunge, and it goes on.
Influences are good, borrowing/stealing is how its done, making it your own is the hard part. Remembering too, it only last so long should you be so lucky.
